Aunty Ginger
Winner of Miss Drag UK 2019
Aunty Ginger, winner of THE title Miss Drag UK 2019 is the self described ‘Trollup with some Wollup’ all the way from Manchester. Aunty’s life mission is to achieve #justiceForCougars and to show there’s more than one type of beauty out there.
We asked Aunty what becoming our winner has done for her and this is what she had to say…
Being part of MDUK has been an amazing experience. Firstly, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy the prizes, the prizes were amazing and made the journey from Manchester to Kent well worth it! Haha! But beyond that I am still so amazed that I won. Honestly I went into the thing with no expectations and thought ‘at Least I’ll make some contacts’ and that I did, I’ve made a whole family of queens and artists I can’t seem to get rid of, and it turned out that entering without expectation was a great strategy to win.
The title has opened up doors and upped my confidence, I have learned a lot but I still feel I have so much to learn and improve which is what he great thing about drag as an art form. This competition is a great platform, and my honest hope is that every year the calibre of queens gets higher and higher making the title more sought after and respected in the drag world.
If you’re going to enter my advice is to remember that this is about more than looking beautiful or having nice gowns. Yes, that’s part of what judges will look for; but remember, you’re also a drag queen, and it is what you can do with a mic after this which gets you booked again and again. Or as Aunty would said “don’t be all fur coat and no knickers”.
Will you see me again? You can’t get rid of me, like a bad rash I will always be the first, the original, Bebe Zahara…, ooops I mean, Aunty Ginger, Miss Drag UK! And I’m staying until they do a winner’s season haha!
Much love,
Aunty G.
